Mobile World Congress 2011

Chris Minas from The Bio Agency shares his key takeouts from the event in Barcelona: and what we can look forward to in the next 10 years.

Tipping points, year of the mobile (again!!), Ecosystems, social connectivity, social change and political drivers were all key words of the conference. Most of us in the community have discussed these subjects at great length over the last 10 years, waiting for the technology to be established as mainstream and patiently anticipating the adoption of emerging solutions by the general public.

Quoted in several keynote presentations at MWC was the key message that we are on the brink of massive change. The quotes echoed a similar message that ‘every decade there is a step change in technological innovation that defines the following 10 years’. It seems now that we might finally be able to harness the true potential of these technologies through cross platform media and the social adoption that is sweeping the planet.

The next ten years will see mobile innovation and smartphone explosion impact social demographics and the human race in a way nothing else has in the past 30 years (Or at least in the last 10!).

Another memorable quote that has kept ringing in my ears was that ‘It took 100 years to get 1 billion fixed telephone lines, but only 20 years to get 1 billion mobile subscribers.’

And, if recent predictions are to be believed, there will be 5 billion mobile subscribers by 2015.

Contagious
